Champagne Rose Wedding Cake

This cake which I thought was going to be a piece of cake, haha, had the last laugh.  The bride's request was for bottom tier (10") to be chocolate with butter cream and the top tier (8") to be vanilla dyed navy blue, then covered in champagne covered roses.  The chocolate was no problem.  Getting a navy colour out of the vanilla was another story.  I used the whole bottle of dye and it just would not get to a true navy blue.  Hopefully it wasn't too off the bride's look that she wanted.

Then came getting the butter cream the right shade of champagne. When you Google champagne, you get a very wide range of colours from ivory to rose to mushroom.  I knew what the bride wanted and no matter what I was doing the colour was way off.  After about an hour I finally settled on the colour and hoped for the best.  I was really panicked that it was going to be off.  A huge lesson learned for me, test out a small batch first before dying the entire triple batch!

To assemble the cake I did a crumb coat on each cake first then added the bubble tea straws as supports before adding the top tier.  I started with the roses from the top and worked my way down.  This took about half an hour to do.  Then I added some white dragees for a little decoration.

I am so mad that I didn't notice the hole in the decorating.  Right at the top to the right.  I spent a good amount of time turning the cake around and around check for holes.  *sigh*

In the end, I was very happy with the way the cake turned out.  When we got to the hall I was so relieved to see the champagne coloured table linens looking a lot like the colour of the cake.  I really hope this cake was what the bride envisioned, or at least close.

80th Birthday Cake and Cupcakes

For this 80th birthday I was asked to make 6" cake and 8 dozen cupcakes.  I was told that the birthday girl liked flowers so that's what I went with for the decorating. I absolutely love how this cake turned out.  It was a two layer 6" cookies n' cream (this time I didn't forget any ingredients!) cake.  I covered it in pale blue fondant, with soft pink and white flowers.  I made a large three layer rose the night before with some leaves so they would have enough time to dry out.  For "80", I cut out two of each number out so I could hide the cocktail stick between the two layers.  I had just enough of the soft pink ribbon to go around the bottom of the cake to finish it off. Now, for the cupcakes I did raspberry cupcake with raspberry mascarpone icing, lemon cupcake with lemon cream cheese icing, caramel cupcake with salted caramel icing topped with caramel sauce and cookies n' cream cupcake with buttercream icing.  Two dozen of each went t...

60th Jack Daniels Birthday Cake

These types of cakes are so much fun to do.  Over the top goodness!  Especially, when the original plan  was to use airplane size bottles of Jack Daniel's instead of one 300mL bottle.  When Mr T went to the LCBO he was told that they longer sell them, at least as this location, due to high theft.  The next smallest size available was the 300mL bottle; though I doubt the birthday boy was disappointed! This was a 3 layer chocolate 8" cake with Bailey's buttercream topped off with Hershey pieces, mini chocolate chip cookies, Ferrero Rocher and Whoppers sitting on top of the chocolate ganache.

WWE Birthday Cake

To decorate this cake I covered it in vanilla buttercream.  The sides I covered in black fondant. To hide the uneven edge of the fondant I added a red border around the top.  For the corners of the ring I used red bubble tea straws I had on hand wrapper with some DMC black floss and topped with black fondant.  Happy Birthday I cut out with fondant.  The WWE logo I printed off and backed it with a laminated piece of red card stock.  Tommy was cut out using my Cricut machine. Cake: 10" chocolate layer and vanilla layer with vanilla pudding filling.
