Moms Birthday/Father's Day Celebration

Mr. T's mom and my mom share the same birthday and it falls very close to Father's Day.  Ever few years it falls on the same day.  Needless to say we are very busy celebrating on this weekend.  This year we (my brother, me and Mr. T) had a BBQ with all of our parents in Bowmanville. Of course I volunteered to make the dessert.

Surprise, the inspiration came from Pinterest. I would love to know where you can get slivered almonds with the skin still on them.  I toasted the silvered almonds, slightly too long to get the "petals" a bit darker for definition but I really like them better the other way.  Oh well!

The one flower that turned out exactly how I wanted it to.

The background is a little wild but I improvised using two napkins.

The cake was really made for our moms.  The steaks were for the dads!  I doubled the recipe for the Melt in Your Mouth Blueberry Cake and covered it in cream cheese almond flavoured icing.  It was really good.  The cake would be fine on it's own without icing, but it wouldn't be a birthday cake!

The shirt Mr T is wearing Miss E made for him several years ago and he wears it every Father's Day.

80th Birthday Cake and Cupcakes

For this 80th birthday I was asked to make 6" cake and 8 dozen cupcakes.  I was told that the birthday girl liked flowers so that's what I went with for the decorating. I absolutely love how this cake turned out.  It was a two layer 6" cookies n' cream (this time I didn't forget any ingredients!) cake.  I covered it in pale blue fondant, with soft pink and white flowers.  I made a large three layer rose the night before with some leaves so they would have enough time to dry out.  For "80", I cut out two of each number out so I could hide the cocktail stick between the two layers.  I had just enough of the soft pink ribbon to go around the bottom of the cake to finish it off. Now, for the cupcakes I did raspberry cupcake with raspberry mascarpone icing, lemon cupcake with lemon cream cheese icing, caramel cupcake with salted caramel icing topped with caramel sauce and cookies n' cream cupcake with buttercream icing.  Two dozen of each went t...

Ty's Milwaukee Tool Box Cake

Clover never ceases to amaze me in what challenge she dreams up for me to do for her son's birthday cake.  This year was no disappointment!  The baking was the easy part for this cake!  The cake was technically a 3 tiered cake that was about 9" x 10".  The tiers were separated with a half inch black cake board cut down to size.  The bottom was chocolate, then vanilla and then cookies and cream.  All were covered in vanilla butter cream before being covered in red fondant. Thankfully Mr T's cousin Amanda was over visiting for the weekend and ended up helping me a lot with the cake.  She built the handle for me using cardboard and electrical tape.  She also told me that it was customary to have stickers on your toolbox so I printed off some plumber related ones and laminated them.  We even got the cake done early and delivered.  Woohoo! Can't wait for next year's challenge!  That's a joke. P.S. Now in my Instagram and ...

60th Jack Daniels Birthday Cake

These types of cakes are so much fun to do.  Over the top goodness!  Especially, when the original plan  was to use airplane size bottles of Jack Daniel's instead of one 300mL bottle.  When Mr T went to the LCBO he was told that they longer sell them, at least as this location, due to high theft.  The next smallest size available was the 300mL bottle; though I doubt the birthday boy was disappointed! This was a 3 layer chocolate 8" cake with Bailey's buttercream topped off with Hershey pieces, mini chocolate chip cookies, Ferrero Rocher and Whoppers sitting on top of the chocolate ganache.
