iPhone Cake, Keaton's 15th Birthday

Keaton never fails to pick a fun theme for his birthday cake.  This year was no exception.  His request was to have an iPhone themed cake and Miss E was to pick out all the apps to go on it.   The app icons were fun to make.  I laminated them to make it easy to stick into the cake. Originally I had "Happy Birthday Keaton!" with a blue background but Miss E pointed out to me that he wouldn't be sending himself the greeting so I changed it to grey.  Thank you E :)  Cake: 6" 3 layer vanilla cake with buttercream icing

Dentist Cake

One of Mr. T's coworkers asked me to do this cake for her sister that had graduated to be a dentist.  She asked that it has a dentist theme with money on it. This was a 6" chocolate cake covered in vanilla buttercream.  You can tell how humid the day was with the shine on the lettering.  The tooth, toothbrush and bills were made from fondant.

Masters in Science Cake

A former coworker of Mr. t's asked me to make this cake for her fiance who had just received his Masters in Science.  She had sent a few pictures of what she wanted on the cake.  The most important was to have the molecule fluvastatin on the top as this was what his M.Sc was on.  Also, to have the ECG around the side of the cake.  I'm telling you I am learning more about science doing cakes than I ever did in high school! This was an 8" 2 layer chocolate cake with mocha filling.  I forgot how good mocha is!  So did Mr. T.  He made a request that his next birthday cake have mocha icing.  I made little pills out of fondant to cover up the seems from on the trim.  Thank goodness for edible markers.  I was able to do the molecule and ECG with them on the cake.  Afterward, I realised I made one small error on the molecule.  I wonder if he noticed.  In the hexagon by the F (I have no idea what any of the letters or lines me...

Mad Science Birthday Cake

I can't believe that this my 4th year doing cakes for Erika and Stathis.  This year's theme was a combined mad science.  Normally I do each their own cake and I wasn't getting off easy by only having to do one! Vicky asked me to do a 3D beaker.  Mr T corrected me again, that it is a round bottom flask and not a beaker.  Science was never my forte in school.  So, this is my interpretation of a round bottom flask. To build it I used two 6" round layers and a half baseball pan followed by three 4" round layers.  All chocolate with chocolate ganache filling. Covering the flask in fondant proved to be a harder task than I anticipated.  It ended up that I did it in three parts.  The seams are covered with green trim.  Really only middle one makes no sense, but it looks better than showing the seam.  Instead of rotating the vertical seam to the back, I rotated it to the side and covered it with the "potion" dripping out.  The 5 an...

Construction Cake for a Civil Engineer

My friend Hibah had booked me to do this cake months ago, but we both forgot about it.  I think I completely forgot about and she forgot to remind me.  But that's okay, I still had plenty of time to make this cake when we talked about it a few days beforehand. Strangely enough the Perfect Chocolate Cake was the perfect cake to do for what Hibah had envisioned.  This was a 3 layer 9" cake with whipped cream filling and the chocolate fudge icing. To make this cake look like a construction zone I sent Mr T off to the dollar store to pick up some toy trucks.  He did not disappoint.  I would tell you what each one was, but I only can confidently say one of them is a dump truck. I trimmed off a portion of the top layer to make it look like it was being dug up and then roughly iced the cake and spread the icing onto the cake board.  The dirt was made out of crushed up Oreo cookies.  The cones were out of fondant. This cake came together fairly quickl...

Science Cake

Miss E took part in a weekly after school program at her day care for science and this past Thursday was the science exhibition.  For the celebration I was asked to make a "science" cake.  This is my interpretation of a flask.  Originally I was calling it a beaker but Mr. T corrected me and apparently this is a flask.  Only making it more obvious that science was not a good subject for me. This cake was easier to make than I thought it would be.  I made a two later 9 x 13 chocolate cake with buttercream filling.  Before I put the crumb coat on I put it in the fridge for 30 minutes to harden.  Then I trimmed the cake into the shape.  The extra pieces Mr. T took to work and were well received.

Calculator Cake

"Arithmetic is being able to count up to twenty without taking off your shoes." -- Mickey Mouse Yesterday we went to a surprise 60th birthday party and I was bringing the cake and cupcakes. For a retired math/science teacher I thought a calculator cake would be perfect to celebrate turning 60.  It had to be gluten free and was told that the chocolate recipes were the best.  So, I Googled recipes and found one with Nutella.  Yummy! Of course as I'm typing out this blog entry I can't find the link to the recipe I used to post on here, because it was really good. I made a peanut-butter cream-cheese icing for the filling and crumb coat before covering it in fondant.  The cake was only 5 x 9, so each "button" was only 1/2 x 1/2. I make four different flavours for the cupcakes, 4 dozen large and 8 dozen minis.  Again, the Oreo cookie cupcakes were a huge hit with the kids.  Seriously, it's just putting any cookie in the bottom before adding the batter and ...
